We are thrilled and honored to announce that Setouchi Guide: Sea Firefly Magical Night Tour (海ほたる幻想ナイトツアー) has been officially selected as one of the 17 finalists for the prestigious Japan Travel Awards 2027!
This year’s awards saw a record-breaking 293 entries from across Japan, celebrating unique travel experiences and destinations that contribute to a better society through sustainability, diversity, inclusivity, and local community connection.
Illuminating the Hidden Magic of the Seto Inland Sea
For over 16 years, our tour organizer has pursued the enchanting natural glow of sea fireflies (vargula hilgendorfii) and bioluminescent dinoflagellates. What started with the surprising realization that even many local residents were unaware of this magical phenomenon has grown into an experience designed to help people rediscover and take pride in their local marine heritage.
Following the gentle, ethereal blue glow along the dark waters of the Seto Inland Sea offers more than just a breathtaking night view—it provides visitors with a deeper appreciation and understanding of our rich, fragile marine ecosystem.
What’s Next?
Between August and October, judges will conduct on-site evaluations to assess each finalist from various global perspectives, including sustainability and accessibility. The official Grand Prix and category winners will be announced in early January as the “Inspiring Places in Japan to Visit in 2027.”
